Maine 2016 Tax Updates

It has been a busy year for Maine 2016 tax year changes. Maine changed its due date, tax rates, standard deduction amounts, deductions, available credits, and refund deposit options.

Maine individual income tax returns for the 2016 tax year are due April 18, 2017. The new tax rates are 5.8%, 6.75%, and 7.15%. The standard deduction amounts have increased for all filing statuses. The standard deduction amount for the Single/Married Filing Separately filing status is $11,600. The standard deduction amount for the Head of Household filing status is $17,400. The standard deduction amount for the Married Filing Jointly filing status is $23,200. The maximum allowable itemized deduction (before medical expenses) has increased to $28,450. Along with the standard/itemized deduction increases, Maine will now reduce a taxpayer's standard/itemized deduction if the taxpayer's income is over the limit for the filing status. Military retirement benefits are now fully deductible.

The Maine Earned Income Tax Credit is now refundable for full-year and part-year residents. There are also two new credits. The Sales Tax Fairness Credit is a new refundable credit of up to $180 based on income level and number of personal exemptions. There is also an Adult Dependent Care Credit for qualified adult care expenses. Maine Revenue Services will no longer be able to deposit refunds into NextGen accounts.
